Georgia's Historic Sites with Civil War History
For any fellow history lovers, Georgia has some really great historic sites that are rich in history. This is not a definitive list of sites in GA, as there are many others. But these are just a few of the sites that are a part of GA's State Parks and Historic Sites:
- AH Stephens State Park: Located in Crawfordville, this park is named after Alexander H. Stephens, the Vice President of the Confederacy, and a former Georgia governor. It later became home of the boys of the CCC. There is now a Civil War museum at the park, with one of the greatest collections of Civil War artifacts. You can also tour Stephens home.
- Fort McAllister: Located in Richmond Hill, Fort McAllister was a Confederate earthen-work fort used to defend Savannah during the Civil War. The earth-work was attacked seven times but did not fall until Sherman's March To The Sea. There is a Civil War museum, gift shop, and visitors can see canons, barracks, Palisades, a hot shot furnace, and more!
- Pickett's Mill Battlefield: Located in Dallas, GA, Pickett's Mill is one of the best-preserved battlefields in the nation. Visitors can travel roads used by Federal and Confederate troops, see earthworks constructed by these men, and walk through the same ravine where hundreds died. An 1800s Pioneer cabin is furnished and open for tours. This site is absolutely rich in Civil War History, and there is a museum also!
